September Playlist

Every month I make a new playlist, it can be filled with songs I’ve never heard before or songs I’ve known for years. The songs kind of reflect different things, whether it be a style I’m enjoying at the minute or the weather changing into a more autumnal vibe and I fancy slapping in some songs from the Twilight soundtrack. I will listen to these songs when I can’t be bothered to find an album or when I’m sick of my Apple-curated playlists.
Sunday morning, Maroon 5
This song came back into my stratosphere through a Basement Yard video on my TikTok of Joey and Frankie singing along, I thought it would be the perfect first song for my September playlist. I’ve never been a big Maroon 5 fan because I used to dance to many of their songs so they are overplayed to me, but now I have rediscovered them in my free time I can say that their album “Songs About Jane is full of amazing songs. “She Will Be Loved” and “This Love” will forever be songs you can belt out in any situation.
“Sunday Morning” will be the first song I hear when I press play on my walk to work, and I hope it puts me in a good enough mood to start my 45-minute walk including a few inclines. Listening to it now has put me in a peppy mood which is surprising since I haven’t had dinner yet.
GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS, Pablo Miller
Bit of a different pace to the previous song, this is my first introduction to Miller. There are only two singles available on Apple Music (yes I am an Apple Music girlie), so I went over to his Instagram to have a stalk. With a decent 81k followers and his recent posts being promotion for this single, I came to find that he is in a band called “Sister Grace” who also only have two singles on Apple Music, both with very different vibes, one more acoustic and the other similar to “GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS”.
This song, for anyone who hasn’t heard it is a mix of “Rush” by Troye Sivan and “Taste” by Sabrina Carpenter. The lyrics “Matching leather with their costume pearls” give me Sabrina vibes but the electronica vibe gives it an edge and makes it very enjoyable to listen to. With the repetitive lyrics, it quickly becomes a song that will get stuck in your head.
Biking (solo), Frank Ocean
There's a special place in my heart for any Frank Ocean songs. The way in which he can switch between singing softly to a rap style so effortlessly is not something you hear every day. Whenever I hear a Frank Ocean song it reminds me of 2019, which is the year I left school, I’m not sure of the correlation but it probably has something to do with the amount of times I heard “Pink + White” and “Super Rich Kids” at BBQ’s and ‘gatherings’. Like all of Frank Ocean's songs, they are easy to listen to but so pleasurable.
Bed Chem, Sabrina Carpenter
Okay so, I tried to dislike Sabrina's music for the longest time but it does slap. Every single song she has released for her album “Short n’ Sweet” has been amazing. for the longest time, I avoided the charts as I felt like it was full of music my mum likes but I really feel a resurgence of the pop music I used to listen to growing up and I am loving it.
The lyrics are so well written and hilarious “Where art thou? Why not uponeth me?”. It’s a sexual song but she does it lowkey so that kids will probably not know what they are singing about, just like I did with Rihanna's “S&M”. I think I have been converted to a Sabrina Carpenter stan, and yes I have downloaded the album (so should you).
Lost in Music (1995 remaster), Sister Sledge
This song will always put me in a good mood. When I listen to this, I want to be the centre of a dance floor with flairs and curled hair, not having a care in the world.
The album “We Are A Family” by sister sledge is one not many of my generation know of but their most popular song “he’s the Greatest Dancer” is the first song on the album. The title “Lost in Music” is very much how I feel when I find a song as alive as this. I feel like this song shows how much these sisters enjoy making music, especially this album. The disco band consists of sisters from Philadelphia, and this album is what sent them straight into the heart of disco. If you want to be transported to a time when music means a lot more than it does today, this song, let alone the album will do exactly that.
Slay Bitch (Bonus Track), Remi Wolf
As an avid listener and lover of her album “Juno”, I was excited to get into her new album “Big Ideas”. When there’s a new album release I listen to it all the way through then I go back and re-listen to the ones that caught my attention and “Slay Bitch” definitely did that. It’s the last song on the album and a bonus track.
The vocals are pitched up which gives us extremely high notes from Remi, I like it because to me it’s similar to her stuff on “Juno” but it is very different to the album this song sits in. It’s giving brat summer. It has the aspects to be a house/dance song and if I heard this in the club (which would be nearly impossible because I never leave my room) I would be bending over and attempting to twerk.
This song is just a massive pick-me-up. Give it a listen and slay bitch.
Personal Space Invader, Sugar Ray
I have no idea how I came across this song, I think I saw the name and instantly wanted to listen. You can tell this was released late 90’s with the beachy punk rock sound which I thoroughly enjoy.
I was doing more research on the band when I found a clip of them performing one of their songs in the Scooby Doo live-action film, which is odd because I was an absolute fiend for those films when I was younger.
Some of the lyrics are relatable and comical to me, “two steps back, you’re in my space” and “Sometimes, I just want to be left alone” I feel that one, as someone who gets overstimulated in Asda it’s very important for me to just be alone in the quiet.
This is a song I’ve never heard before so there is quite little to say about it yet but I think as the weeks go on I’ll be singing along to it, out of time and tune probably.
Die with a Smile, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars
Two of my favourite artists from my adolescence have come together and produced an absolute banger! Bruno’s vocals have always taken centre stage and he knows how to have full control over the range which I can imagine is hard. I was a fan of his early stuff but when Silk Sonic came to be, phew, that album altered the way I viewed new music.
Gaga, to me, is one of the best female singers of our generation. She has so much talent and is always able to adapt to the style, whether that be wearing a meat dress or stripping back for her role in “A Star Is Born” where she made more people fall in love with her through her sheer talent.
Hearing their voices together, an unexpected combo but oh my days, ethereal. This will be like the collaboration of David Bowie and Queen singing "Under Pressure” or Mavin Gaye and Tammi Terrell with “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”. It will be played for years.
Cherish the Day, Sade
The longest song on this playlist, sitting at five minutes thirty-two seconds. This is one of my favourite songs from this album, “Love Deluxe” which was released in 1992. She has a soft velvety voice which is easily recognisable to the ear, along with the soul R&B fusion that works effortlessly.
This is a love song, telling us to literally “cherish the day” we get to spend with loved ones, having that present moment of appreciation. “You won’t catch me running” showing how she’s not going to stray from this current relationship. Matching the lyrics with Sade’s vocals creates a sensual feeling, not dirty but a swaying loving vibe.
If I could drive (working on it) I would be blasting this on a late-night rendezvous.
Woman, Harry Styles
Okay so, I had a bit of a crazy Harry Styles fan moment at the height of COVID but I have since calmed down and taken down my incredibly large poster of him naked off my wall. His first two albums are my favourite but I struggled to enjoy this latest release as much as I felt like he gravitated towards producing top chart songs more than going down an experimental route.
“I’m selfish I know, but I never wanna see you with him” That opening line ugh! To know that a man like Harry Styles gets jealous is refreshing, he’s just like us at the end of the day (not really but you get what I mean).
The La La La La’s give me a similar vibe to Gilmore Girls but add a slight rock tinge. His vocals in this song with the layering of different key changes, it’s honestly in my top five for his singles. The guitar solo too! How could I forget, Mitch Rowland is a master with the guitar and it always adds to the production of the song, whilst keeping the main focus on the vocals.
With this song being on his first solo album away from the band, I think it shows us the type of music he prefers to produce compared to what was being released during his time in One Direction. It is an incredibly fun listen and will always end up with me doing air guitar.
So, this playlist is full of weird odds and sods which just explains me very well. I always try to add songs that I won't be bored of by the end of the month and I think I've done a decent job this time.
You can find my playlists on Apple Music and enjoy it along with me or you can stalk and see what else I've been listening to. Let me know what is on your playlist this month!
